Colored Clay
Colored clay is porcelain that has been mixed with ceramic stains. It can be used intrinsically in the creation of artwork and is part of the body of the work as opposed to being on the surface.
Nerikomi is a Japanese art form that piles up different colors of clay to create strips or a design. This image can be viewed on the inside, like a cross-section, or on the outside. This type of construction is usually hand-built.
Neriage is another Japanese practice that uses colored clay. The difference from Nerikomi is that by using the potter’s wheel, the artist can create a swirling motion of colors and white clay.
